To make hard mode more interesting you should have to manage body temperature of your character. I see several ways of this working firstly it can be related of installation of your clothing, running greats heat but uses more food and water. There should also be different environments were you have to make different choices based on the temperature of the map.

Judging by the scope of survival mechanics that have already been confirmed, I would say the body temperature system should be applied to all difficulties.
