Well sometimes its been used in clever ways. Someone made an “ant” map - or, a map where the players feel like ants because the scene has been blown out of proportion. It had many “compound” objects used as ways to get around the map that looked smooth. idk 
Since it’s necroed anyway.
Compound is completely acceptable for workshop maps. It can be done good but it can also look bad.
Compound work is definitely not acceptable for curated maps though and that’s where you should be creating as many custom objects as possible. Not only can you achieve better looking results you will obviously get better performance than smacking multiple objects together.
