Why am I able to put on an infinite amount clothes and backpacks?

There currently isn’t anything to prevent that in-game. If you pay attention to the other stuff with items, you’ll see that nested storage has already been somewhat handled at this point though.
how many shirts can you put on before you die of lung constriction and loss of blood flow

The correct question would be how many shirts you can put on until you just can’t put on any more.
