Who else remembers those old 3d clouds? Why were they removed and are they ever coming back, at least as a toggleable option/setting? IMO they fit Unturned’s artstyle better than the 2d ones that we have now, I can’t help but think they look out of place in this game.
Those were pretty nice, but the 2d ones fit so well with the water physics n stuff, it blends really well with the terrain, giving you the contrast of simple terrain with beautiful light, water, and clouds.
I can’t find the post explaining the rational anymore, but iirc it was to reduce the render passes (clouds were rendered separately), and to be able to reduce the maximum render distance (and allow players to customise their render distance)
The old 3D clouds required a really large minimum render distance in order to be correctly rendered, from what I can remember.
It would be nice to have them back, but I don’t think it’s likely that we’ll be seeing them again.
Regardless, the solution may be to add these clouds yourself by particle effects if you want and have some modding skills. Of course, it is unlikely to work 100% correctly, but it is possible.
Agreed absolutely.
They were unoptimized; they should have been done with a shader, but they were literally just objects flying around, which increased draw calls and drained FPS.
uhhhh… what???
I really hope we could see them back as a toggleable setting.
Surely there’d be some kind of way to fix it? Maybe have them rendered with the maps so they get reduced with render distance
They could have been done in a shader pass, yes. The current clouds are more of a modern approach, and I assume Nelson decided to go with them in order to make them more customisable at some point (easier to adjust with different weather events)
For those interested in a more technical explanation: it’s mentioned in r/unturned and in a community blogpost.
