Third Place

What we found with Middenclaw was a very interesting concept, Similar to early Minecraft challenge maps. The project had a very chill vibe with sailing island to island and killing zombies. We also like the unique NPCs, their quests give the map a never before seen experience in Unturned. We think a major drawback of this project is failing to communicate its objective organically within the map, it’s hard to know what you’re supposed to be doing while starting off, and orienting yourself in the world can be difficult… It hits the mark on being an adventure map, but the lack of an encompassing goal—besides the fetch quest—diminished the experience for all of us. The fetch quests were also very dependent on RNG, which can make it very difficult to progress. To sum up our takeaways, its unique concept, chill vibe, unique NPC quest/dialogue, nonlinear gameplay, and a lack of a clear goal have earned 3rd place for Middenclaw.

Second Place

Destroy Crystal is a very straightforward experience with its tight, enclosed spaces and roadblocks. You’re thrown in quickly, and you have to be aggressive to succeed. All judges were in agreement that the earlier sections of the map were overcrowded with too many zombies, which made it much more difficult than it needed to be. The ending area was also very difficult to get through and almost impossible to beat due to bugs and the health of the crystal being unreasonably high given the player’s arsenal. Besides these pitfalls, the map earned its 2nd place rating due to many unique and technically impressive sections, like the elevator section and boss fight. It has a well communicated objective with tightly designed gameplay to match. The only thing holding back Destroy Crystal is the lack of some kind of narrative, and the bugs. These are the reasons why we came to the decision of 2nd place for Destroy Crystal.

First Place

Undergrown hit on a lot of the ideas we were hoping to see. We liked the radio NPC dialogue and the story that it was telling the player. We enjoyed the environment and the puzzles that the map gave when it came to us obtaining the keys for the final part of the map. The detractors of this map were bugs—namely a softlocked if you died—requiring cheats to complete, some rough teleport transitions and pop-in and a lack of detailing in some areas. Besides these pitfalls, the map embodied an adventure map experience, and that’s why we came to the placement of number 1 to Undergrown.

Runner Up

Unturned RPG

The concept for the map was interesting and a fun idea. The big problem for us is the lack of a goal and a hook to keep us playing. The quests were taken from Russia and Hawaii, and placed around somewhat randomly—which was a big detractor for all of the Judges. The experience costs to complete each quest was often higher than the experience rewarded for completing said quests, if this and If the quest line was better structured, with a goal to achieve, rather than just getting better gear, it would have made the experience definitely more enjoyable. The map was pretty enjoyable for all of us nevertheless and definitely has a lot of potential.
