China, Mexico, and Australia are pretty big places, it might be a good idea to just focus on specific parts of them. (i.e. instead of trying to squeeze all of China into one map, you could focus on a specific part like mountainous Tibet or the desertic Gobi)

Laos, Thailand, Morocco & Romania are all great map locations.

Where the fuck is Finland!

Finland is Scandinavian Russia.

Finland isn’t a scandinavian country

Some consider it to be one. Just like how some consider Iceland to be one.

Scandinavia ≠ Nordic countries

Never mentioned Nordic countries, I just said Scandinavian, some consider Finland to be a part of Scandinavia.

I’m going to have to KOS you for that

It is a part of Scandinavia

If Scandinavia includes Finland then what’s the difference between it and Fennoscandia?

You should do a valley in the Netherlands

I think he should do France.

Don’t make a map based on real geographical location. Branding your map with a name of real country/state or whatever is only limiting your freedom in some aspects and it’s giving some people of expectations (one of the best examples I can think of this is when France released we had a guy complaining that grass was different color than what he had outside… yes). Instead you should take inspiration from whatever you see fit and make it work with what you have going. Create a fictional region, make up a name for it, create a flag, it’s fun. Doing that grants you complete freedom over what you are creating and you can make things that would seem completely out of place in ‘country’ you would otherwise basing your map on.

I really don’t see point in limiting yourself to certain country, you could argue that some vanilla maps are also based on certain real countries and also have rather ‘unrealistic’ choices to them but you also have people complaining that there’s no X in X country or whatever. I really don’t understand why sticking to real geographical locations is such a trend with maps (Carpat being one good exception, but setting is sadly about only thing it did completely right).

And relevant meme from another thread to end this rant.

make moldova
or turkmenistan
or the Faroe Islands
or jamaica
or Serbia

Tell that to the team who made Russia

Isn’t Carpat set in the Carpathian mountains?

This might sound a bit harsh, but unless you’re going full on sci-fi or fantasy next to no one has any fucks to give about the world building of the fictional country of your Unturned map. That’s not to say you can’t or shouldn’t make a fictional location, but if you want people to appreciate your world-building your better off looking to conlangers, tabletop roleplayers, writers, or dedicated world building communities. Now as to what appeal real geographical locations add to maps, that can largely be chalked up to existing interest in or understanding of what the map may be like.

Carpat used certain region as an inpiration, they didn’t name the map ‘Ukraine’ or use real life names for their locations.

If you are going all in with your map you would make NPCs and some notes for it for people to understand your map a bit more, I see throwing real locations in that as just a way to complicate your own work for no good reason. When creating Unturned map you are doing the world building that has very little to do with realism, why bother with location, specific setting in addition to all that? Too many teams start their ‘maps’ with a globe and a dart in order to determine location of their map. Base your map around something more unique, not neccesarily a location, maybe some gameplay idea (again what Carpat did, although not perfectly, they did have some idea).
