Project USA - A workshop proposal

Through usage of the Unturned map merge tool (what enabled the All Maps in One workshop map and the like), could it be possible to splice together small maps on an insane template?

Please see the attached image for what I am thinking: Project USA. Each state is given a small size map (some are 2x1 like california) and some small states are combined into 1 small map, but ultimately the dimensions would be 10 x4 small maps / 2.5 x 1 large maps.

Curious if this has been thought of before, it could make for a very cool workshop project.

If insane is not possible, this can be broken up into chunks I suppose. Like the column for MI, OH, KY/TN east, and GA could be its own map called “The Interstate” with a focus on the I-75 corridor - a vertical map like that might be cool.

This reminds me of the four and one maps in the creative workshop. Someone pieced together four maps of PEI Russia Washington Yukon into one map. If many areas can be pieced together into a small map through a large map, then the deathmatch PVP mode will be very interesting in the future. This will allow players to be born at a random location, which may be a place where a large area is reduced and pieced together into a small map

This is a fun idea, and looks more doable than some of the “Insane-sized USA map” ideas I’ve seen over the years. Although even if you’re not super concerned about loot progression or making each state look unique (and instead just focused on the novelty), it’d still be a lot of work!

You can already create custom map sizes/shapes in the level editor. But you’ll run into issues if you go past the “insane” size. E.g.,

Yeah I bet I could get a plan created that squeezes the whole thing into 2x1 large maps to stay within the insane limit.

I’ve never used that splice tool but I imagine connecting roads and hills/rivers/terrain in general afterwards is no fun. It might be better to just make it 1 map that’s custom “half insane” size but I can see that would lead to burnout real fast as opposed to delegating individual small sized maps to the community and bringing it all together at the end.

a project where you just do two half of the US maps (west then east) may be more feasible. Sounds like a cool project tho. Good luck if you do it, even the landscape portion alone will be mighty impressive.

Very true. I probably can only handle the time commitment for a medium size map/4 of those squares atm but wanted to open this up to the community, would be a cool collab project

You might also need quite a lot of help for materials and foliage, as such a map would require a lot variety of it, but it’s definitely a type of map I’d love to see !

Overall, I feel it is more of a cooperative project indeed, but I am sure many modders / mappers (me included) who love to contribute in some way.

At one point I was slowly working on something to import/export map data from Unturned. The map merger tool may allow for this already, but you could hand out the full copy of the map and set it up to only worry about the things that change. I don’t know if there would be any benefit to it, but it’d preserve any terrain or roads between the tiles instead of leaving gaps that have to be dealt with.

Another option with it would be that instead of handing out the full map, everyone would only need their tiles and the tiles adjacent to them for it to preserve the seams.

Yeah dealing with the seams will be an issue for sure. I should probably hit up the all maps in one creators to see how they handled that

Ok if anyone would like to be involved on this DM me here and I will invite you to a discord

Since this is a workshop project there’s no harm in uploading it and updating it as you go. Up to you though, I understand the satisfaction in uploading it all in one go ofc

This is probably the better idea tbh, each update being a new state. Would prevent burnout

The one perhaps major downside is that there won’t be as much workshop hype and subs may grow a lot slower. I’m unsure if there’s a good way to really go about avoiding something like that. I would certainly encourage you to have a good chunk of work done before you upload if you go with the approach I mentioned.

Regarding hype, a community collaboration on something like this is exactly the kind of thing we’d love to highlight on the menu when it’s ready! It’s only a shame that the vanilla support for merging collaboration of so many maps would be arduous/challenging without external tools. In a somewhat similar vein there’s a map project on the subreddit adding the most requested comment every so often and I’m hoping to highlight them once it’s completed as well.

Ah yes the subreddit wouldn’t be a bad idea to gather support on. For now I’ve tried to “segment” this 32 tile plan into 8 regions, each being 4 tiles/1 medium sized map. Maybe that will help ease the map splicing. This Trello outlines each region with location ideas: Trello

My goal here is to be as vanilla as possible, to fit in with the official maps but also have a couple new assets, just don’t want to go overboard as it’s insane size after all and can affect performance.
