Should Nelson release the source codes?

Okay, I know it’s a topic that’s already been discussed, but I really think it would be a waste to leave Unturned II completely abandoned. I think it’s more than clear that it won’t be released anymore. Of course, I’m not blaming Nelson, as he has already pointed out, he had completely justifiable reasons to pause the project, in addition to deciding that he wants to focus more on Unturned 3.0. However, I still think it would be a good idea to release the source codes of the demo so that the modding community could do s

Benefits:
-The community could implement new mechanics and ideas that might not have been considered by Nelson, generating fresh and innovative experiences.
-Releasing the source code would allow both beginner and experienced developers to learn from a real project, fostering collaboration among different talents.
-The community could use the code to create alternative versions or mods of the game, creating new opportunities for spin-offs and player-generated content.
-Unturned II would be a project literally made by the community and for the community.

Do you think this is a good idea?

I would say 50/50. According to your pointed out benefits, of course it would be great, also maybe the community will continue and somehow finish this project, so Unturned II will be made by the community. But sharing codebase is not that easy. I am sure that something was taken from Unturned and by releasing the source code of Unturned II it can cause some problems with Unturned. Like Hackers can find weaknesses in the game and suppose that some of them are the same in Unturned 3.0. This is only 1 problem that can arise.

I think this is very unlikely considering UII is in a different engine and using a different language.

This discussion is probably going to get heated eventually on this topic (perhaps?) but my personal opinion is that it is not worth making Unturned II open source at the current moment.

The fact of the matter is that the game did not have some of the main elements that make Unturned, well Unturned. Nor did it include a proper gameplay loop to work with. The building blocks are there, but I have doubts about the actual usability of the source code.

i was too lazy to reply earlier but you have said most of my points for me lol

Yea I’m not sure there’s much point b/c like JDance said, very incomplete game. The game was being remade from scratch a lot during the period where it was put on hold, so I would imagine that the existing code either a) isn’t particularly usable or b) is minimal enough that you may as well start from scratch.

unturned 2.25 should be open source i think

nelson should release the 2.0 code just as a testing first and then go with 3.0

Probably like Jdance mentioned he should probably not spend his time right now releasing the code of the game and instead focus his time on more important matters on 3.0.

I think it would be interesting for people as a learning experience and a reference just how far Nelson has come in terms of coding to see the source code released
