I know this could leave an awful aftertaste, but I feel it a necessary discussion to have due to these… uncertain times regarding Unturned’s future.
I would first like to say, I FULLY, 100% believe that Unturned is most likely the precursor to huge MMOs that reflect that of ones you would see in say, an anime, like Sword Art Online with the world seed, and overlord with yggdrasil.
With how Nelson has created this game, it has so much potential, not just for modding but completely new games, think of platforms like roblox, this game could be that big, but functionally different, with much bigger maps, each server functioning like its own individual game running off of the same engine. With the right modifications to the engine, you could fully optimize maps, making it easier to make even bigger maps, and maybe having a system like minecraft, where the maps are titanic in size. Nelson, if you read this, watch SAO, and aspire for your game to have a similar legacy to the world seed. Your game is incredibly unique, and it has so much potential, I am not familiar with the process but I am sure it will be difficult, but it will be worth it.
I believe in this game’s potential, but I think you’re going a bit far.
Unturned currently doesn’t have the potential to become a game engine like Roblox. Nor does it have the potential for titanic maps like Minecraft. And I don’t believe it should focus on those. They just aren’t what Unturned is about.
Unturned has its own potentials that can be focused on. We shouldn’t be looking outwards to copy other ideas; we should be looking inwards to see what is unique about the game and how to make it better by using it’s unique potential
Unturned already is that. Many servers have their own custom game modes. Zombies are already trivial and could honestly be removed and the game would be the same. If Nelson gave modders more support and tools then I feel like “survival” maps would die out in favour of other game modes.
Unturned’s potential comes from its modding community, I do believe it has that potential though, perhaps open sourcing 3.0 and working on a new engine that has the capacity for larger maps and such. Yes he is limited by his current engine, but I believe it can be done, and thats why im saying its potential and not what should be done
I fully agree, and thats what I mean. My comparison to the world seed from SAO is that with the style of game, and the potential of the engine, hundreds of new, unique and more complex games could be made from the source code. Yes unturned already has many game modes and whatever, but it could lead to so much more.
I don’t disagree, it does. But there are many other games out there that do as well, most of of them have more than what is left of 3.X.
It is not a MMO, it is not VR and the servers are only okay-ish and running 24/7.
