Users can seek to have their Forum account be permanently anonymized. When a user account is anonymized, the user information is scrubbed and the account is given a randomly-assigned anonymous username.

Account anonymization is a permanent process that removes identifying information from your profile, while still preserving your contributions to the Forum. Posts are not outright deleted when an account is anonymized. This is important in order to help prevent disrupting discussions.

What happens when my account is anonymized?

  • You will no longer be able to log in to the Forum with that account.

  • Your account will be given a new, randomly-assigned username such as anon1234. All of your posts, and any @mentions or quotes made by other users, are updated to this username.

    • Posts made by other users that include your username in some other form—and any previously deleted posts—are not updated to the new, randomly-assigned username.
  • Your email, name, date of birth, and avatar are removed.

  • Your user profile is removed.

  • Any third-party authentication mechanisms are revoked.

Anonymizing an old account

Users can request account anonymization. To request account anonymization, send a direct message (DM) to the @forum-team.

Please be very clear and explicit if you are requesting account anonymization.

Deleting a new account

New users can delete their own account from their profile preferences, if the account:

  1. was created within a few days
  2. hasn’t posted more than once

A new user can do this from their account preferences. If your account does not meet the aforementioned criteria to self-delete, then you can still inquire about account anonymization instead.
