Replacement Trees Discussion

Looks fire. Please update texture of birch a bit

Much better. Birch texture still needs work,The visible UV seams on it are pretty eye catching. Lower res texture on leaves looks bad, stick with the higher res version.

Any chance we could see tri/vert counts for new models vs legacy?

Looks good to me, ship it

make the leaves more high quality textures and i think thats it we will all love it

Perfect! Although Iā€™m concerned about the amount of leaf cards and the lag caused from overdraw. I think you could get away with less fluffy trees (or perhaps optimize later? :person_shrugging:).

Also Iā€™d stick with the non-low resolution version since the leaf cards have been scaled up the physical size of the pixel is bigger and thus you donā€™t need to lower the resolution.

looks way better now

The v2-trees have a better shape and density, but their leaves look out of place next to the higher-resolution grass. Maybe the leavesā€™ resolution could be changed to something closer to that of v1ā€™s leaves?
Extra question: When the vanilla trees have gotten their replacements, will something like this be done for the curated maps affected by the speedtree-removal as well? Or will that be up to the map authors to decide (and do)?

Up to the map authors: SDG doesnā€™t have direct control over curated maps. For maps that are actively maintained thereā€™ll likely be some updatesā€“some maps have already taken preperations/released prettier non-speedtree treesā€“but older curated maps (not including Greece & Hawaii) are unlikely to get updated.

I feared as much, yeah.
Hawaiiā€™s palm trees are just tragic to look at now that their Speedtree-models are gone.

I miss-spoke in my original post. Those maps are actually likely to get updated at some point since SDG does actually maintain those. Though Greece is unlikely to get much love any time soon. iirc thereā€™s still quite a few things on that map that need maintenance that SDG hasnā€™t had time for.

Great job! Looks good

nice, btw is there a possibility that tree debris will return?

Oh nice idea tho I also would love to see them

Thatā€™s reassuring. Hereā€™s hoping they find the time for it.

V1 the body needed some work and the leaves looked really really good, except for some weird gaps.
this looks like a real tree:

V2 the body is good enough, but the leaves are way too blurry and way to bulbous, the trees donā€™t feel natural.
this looks like a blurry, stretched blob of green:

Is there anything being done to the shaders, such as unifying all foliage shaders like grass/leaves etc. or something like the effect that helicopters had on speedtrees but for vanilla?

I fully agree with you. V2 leaves are indeed too blurry and in general V2 needs rework.

@SDGNelson Because this discussion is being bumped and there still is not sight of a new preview branch, does the lower resolution textures coincide with people who might not have a powerful pc to choose as a graphics setting for their performance or is it rather a question to the community on whether it looks better?

The preview branch should be available later today, but it wonā€™t include the updated tree models at this time. Sorry!

Weā€™re still hoping to finalize and include the new models with the actual update.

Currently, thereā€™s no plans to include a tree quality graphics setting. The overall texture size is low enough that weā€™re doubtful itā€™d improve anyoneā€™s performance. Although these teasers/screenshots are old, the current resolution is the higher of the two shown. But weā€™re experimenting with an even higher resolution as well.

Having an option to cull backfaces would be nice too.
