Tank and armored vehicles/military munitions

I <3 tanks!!! I <3 this post!!! That was AWESOME!!! Finally someone who understands…

That said, and without being toxic, I enjoy PVE…a lot. I feel ike the more attention spent on features like this (i.e. making a tank work and feel like the modern work of technological, engineering, and martial masterpeice that it is in real life), then the more likely the game will quickly devolve into full war all the time KOS that is Unturned 3.x PvP.

Now maybe I am wrong about that. Maybe the game should become what some of us want it to become…their very own family rated Call of Duty.

…but what about ‘my’ unturned! The phylosophically brooding sandbox survival game about the zombie apocalypse that is, yes, still kid friendly! Even given my love for all things war machine…I just can’t get behind this topic without feling like I am betraying the PVE game I want to see grow into something AWESOME! Can we do the tank thing and still have a PVE? What place does this level of tank-nerd obsession have in my beloved zombie survival game?

Everything except all the different shell types.

Well, at most, in terms of actual combat there should only have to be 3 positions to run the tank at full capacity: a driver, gunner, and commander/secondary gunner. I do think that the tank should have space to transport at least 2 additional people though. Given how there’s quite a bit of hull space.

I honestly don’t understand the argument that realistic tanks would make Unturned into even more of a PvP focused game. Real tanks don’t function well outside of a supply chain, or without heavy maintenance. I understand that OP doesn’t mention this, but the way tanks have been rebalanced from the real world to videogames has always been to facilitate combat (and because of limitations of the medium) so I think moving towards realistic tanks wouldn’t necessarily encourage PvP combat. Though the mentioned features wouldn’t necessarily discourage PvP, the idea that realism somehow encourages PvP seems to me to be quite silly.

Ah…you’re reframing my argument to fit into an idea you like to shred. Cute. No where in my post did I say that a more realistic tank would make Unturned more PvP. I said the more attention paid to war machines will make Unturned more PvP. No one created a post about making buses mor real…of Winnebagos. It’s tanks, choppers, and other military vehicles.

Unless you grew up on or near a military base such machinery is rarely seen in modern life. They are even less likely to play much of a role in a post apocalyptic world for the same reasons you have stated (logistics, supply chain, maintenance) and some you havn’t like training. Who knows how to drive a tank, fire it’s gun, maintain the machine so it does not explode on use? Besides, in PvE, what use is a tank, even with a single loaded shot in the barrel? Even APC’s and Humvees, while cool, require lots of spare parts and maintenance. The Industrial Military Complex makes its money from air filters and turbine parts after the sale of such equipment. Those machines are designed to need a lot of care to keep them in fighting form. Yet we want more detail on how the tank works, more players involved in the operation of the tank. This invites folks from ‘World of Tanks’ who want a little zombie apocalypes rolled into their constant tank warefare all the time. I love tanks as much as anyone…just not in Unturned. I want more PvE and only PvP if it does not overwhelm the zombie survival gaming. That’s my opinion, whether you think its silly or not.

Well you’re entitled to your opinion. However I would like to point out that part of your argument is that

Which is still based on realism. By your own admission, realistically tanks would be rare to find, and expensive to use and maintain. Which would limit their PvP use, and making them only of great use to players who invest the time and resources finding, repairing, maintaining, refueling, resupplying, and learning to operate a tank. On the subject of operating tanks, while it’s true that tanks have complex controls, which are different from the controls of cars, that doesn’t mean that controlling tanks is completely Lovecraftian to use mere mortals. No tank (to my knowledge) has more controls than there are on a keyboard in a single station. Operating a tank would realistically be different than driving a car, but that doesn’t mean that it should be impossible to use.

The training required to operate a tank mostly goes into the actual tactics/operation practice: i.e. working in complete tandem, keeping situational awareness in combat situations, a crap ton of procedures, etc. A civilian will figure out how the “controls” work. It’s just that, when you tell him to engage in “travelling overwatch” or “bounding overwatch”, he won’t underatand what you mean. He also won’t be able to, say, work with the gunner and loader to maintain a misfired round. For the record, the expertise limit is also a good prevention of the “Unturned-COD” scenario, as it, well, limits professional use of a tank.

Seems moot. Again, to what end? What advantages does a tank grant to warrant all the work it takes to run and maintain…work that will not be spent on subsistance living? Willl you fire a round at a zombie? What will you do as the trembling, which can be felt for 1/2 mile, attracts every zombie in that radius? I don’t see it’s purpose in this context. It’s loud, expensive, and provides no actual benefits in a survival situation that you cannot get from a rugged civilian 4x4 without all the fuel consumption, noise, etc.

Ultimately the tank is a giant rolling liability. A massive steel coffin waiting for the moment to snap shut on its inhabitants. In PvP this can be funb to try once or twice but in PvE? Even in PvP, the tank confers no significant survivability to its operators. I’ve seen in creative servers time and again how stupid it is to call down a tank and actually drive it. It’s more often used is a giant magical baricade you can call down and use as cover. Get in and a rocket with your name on it will soon be on its way.

Throw me a bone here. Why do we need tanks?

I agree with @101gamer101

A tank having 3 seats, each with a different role would be a cool idea. More armor, sure. But that is all the additions we need regarding tanks.
I would also go with @Aj_Gaming 's idea that the tank would require work in order to use all features. Like repairing the machine gun, or finding one and placing it.
The tank should be really difficult to maintain, but gives the player a reward for the hard work. No need for “more tanks”. We dont want tanks to be the main focus of a PvE
